The Salem Witch Trials (Kaleidoscope)
Published in Library Binding by Benchmark Books (September, 2001)
Author: Edward F. Dolan
Average review score:

An excellent juvenile history of the Salem Witch Trials
I saw an interesting documentary on PBS making the argument that the visions reported and the convulsions observed by the young girls who causes the Salen Witch Trials were caused by rye infected with the key ingredient in LSD. So I was curious to see how this particular black spot on American history (pre-American history?) was being explained to young students. Edward F. Dolan makes the attempt in "The Salem Witch Trials" for Kaleidoscope.

This book certainly does not pull any punches in terms of providing details, naming names and such. Dolan makes it clear that the Puritans really did believe there were witches and pays some attention to exactly what that meant during those times. Consequently, Dolan is able to explain why certain women were obvious victims for the hysteria that came to pass. If anything, Doran pays less attention to the young girls who made the accusations and more to how the accused were tried, convicted and executed, which certainly seems appropriate all things considered. This book is illustrated with historic etchings and paintings, some rather contemporary I would imagine, as well as a photograph of one of the gravestones of a man pressed to death because he would not confess. This book is much more informative than one usually finds for this grade level and does an excellent job of not only relating the event, but explaining it and assessing its key parts. Dolan even makes an effort to end on an optimistic note by saying the trials had a healthy effect on the country as American law took a major step away from superstition.

Sarah Morton's Day Beautiful Photos
Live photos. Great story. The notes in the back on history of the Plimoth Plantation and who Sarah Norton really are cool. Sarah Morton was really a girl who lived in a house with dirt floor in 1627. There's even a glossary in the back.

The Seekers Reveiw
The Seekers

I rate this book five stars. I liked this book because it kept me wanting to read it, it was very suspenseful. I also liked it because it was like a love story and I like love stories. This was a very unique book. Not many books have the same theme as The Seekers, but one book I know is Titanic, the Long Night. It was a love story and a journey to the New World, which then was called New York. This story was very different form others I have read. I like that, it means that it doesn't copy other themes and has a mind of it's own. IT has a plot whish will make you want to read it over and over again. It is not only fictional, but historical too. It talks about the hardships that the people on the journey have to the New World and what they had to face when they got there. I recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic and adventure stories. It will make you want t read it, not like those fake books that are not suspenseful. It's short but very adventurous. I had fun reading it. This book makes you think how committed you are to your love ones. The people in this book care about each other very much, for example Edward is so committed to his love one Rebecca, that he goes all the way to the New World just to be with her. But also there is men in the story who loves adventure, but also can be caring. This book should be read, I recommend it.

Silver Ghost: A Sarah Kelling Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Mysterious Press (August, 1988)
Author: Charlotte MacLeod
Average review score:

A Fun Read
I'm currently working my way through all of the Sarah Kelling mysteries, and this one was no different, being equally enjoyable.

In this book, we're revisit old friends, the Billingsgates. We've met up with them in the Convivial Codfish mystery. This time, they were robbed. The burglar took two Rolls Royces from a locked room, along with the very "Kelling" Aunt Bodicea Kelling. Only Sarah and Max Bittersohn can solve this mystery, and do so in such an interesting, enjoyable way...well, excluding the murders anyway.

We also get to visit other characters from the Convivial Codfish, like the Dorks, the Tolbathys, Cousin Lionel of the hyena pack, and even his mother, Aunt Appie. Needless to say, this is an pleasant and swiftly read story. By the time you realize you've gotten to the middle, you'll already be 3/4 of the way done. Hope you enjoy!

Absolutely the best guide to plants of the Gulf Coast.
This book has good photos for a user who needs to flip through for a visual i.d. as well as a full binomial key for the expert. It is comprehensive, showing grasses to trees, including far more than just common or showy species. I keep one in my library and another in my car.

Unbelievable Detail
If you are history buff, this work tells the story of King Philip's War as no other.

One caveat: As with all histories of the day, it has zero objectivity with regard to the First Nations.

Still, the details this book provides will be found nowhere else.

Reading the accounts in other history books on the era gives you a general idea about particular battles. This book goes into GREAT detail.

It is worth both the price and the wait to have it printed. Superb!
